What you need to know

Big Bash League (BBL)

It’s tense, action packed and fast paced – the Big Bash is thrilling even for ‘non cricket watchers.’

If you’re just jumping into the series or you’re completely new to cricket in general, let us fill you in on everything you need to know to get you up-to-date so you can join us at one of our sports bar locations.

Beginning December 5th and running to the end of January, the Big Bash is the ultimate summer sports competition. Run by Cricket Australia, matches will be hosted at 14 grounds across the country. Teams include; Perth Scorchers, Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder. We’re currently mid-through the season and boy are the games getting intense!

BBL Rules

Each year, the BBL develops new twists and turns to make the game even more fast paced and gripping for the audience. Here are some of the latest rules to keep an eye out on in this year’s series.

Time saving

A crackdown on time saving is at the forefront for the 2021/2022 cricket season as organisers announced that last season’s games went longer than the 3 hours. Talks of reducing the amount of drink breaks have been deliberated; however, this restriction won’t be in set in place this season.

Timed Out

Similar to the previous time out rule yet, with a twist. This year, umpires are required to keep a close eye on the clock as new batters are required to reach the wicket within 75 seconds. Failure to do so, will grant the bowler a free delivery at the stumps, if the bowler misses the batter can start their innings.

Bash Boost & Power Surge

These two rules were introduced last year and will continue to influence the structure of the game this season. To refresh your memory, Bash Boost is the bonus point given to the team with more runs at the 10-over stage whilst Power Surge saw the introduction of a two-over batting powerplay that can be taken at any point after the first four overs. These innovative additions will increase pressure on teams to score points and score them quickly.

Ashes to ashes

It’s the series all Australians eagerly hold out for, the Ashes, with this series already proving to be a memorable one. If you’ve been keeping up with the tests you’ll know what we’re talking about. If you’ve (somehow) missed the series so far, allow us to run you through the most noteworthy moments.

The 3-nil results from the Boxing Day Test saw Australia win the Ashes earlier than anticipated. Test 3 was England’s last chance to have a fighting chance against Australia, however with Boland’s dream performance, Australia proudly retained the Ashes by beating England by an innings and 14 runs at the MCG.

Controversially, after Australia’s outstanding win, the England team failed to show up for the traditional handshake. Legendary English commentator Michael Vaughan shared his disappointment in England’s actions which left captain Root shaking the hands of the Aussie team solo. Vaughan suspected the devastating loss by England within a short 12 days of test cricket left them retreating to the dressing room in shame. England will want to turn themselves around if they want to save face at the end of the series.

Beers, burgers and bloody good cricket

We’re excited to see how Perth Scorchers perform for the rest of the season and although celebrations have already begun for Aussies with the Ashes, we don’t doubt England will give us the hard yards to complete the final series.

What are you waiting for? It’s time to order a pint, grab a table with your mates and get stuck into the Big Bash PLUS the final test for the Ashes!
