Regardless of whether you’re a hard-core footy fanatic or you haven’t even watched an AFL match this season… the Western Derby brings everyone together! It’s the match all of WA eagerly awaits, almost as much as the Grand Final itself. Even if a team has lost every match yet, if they win the derby, the team wins the bragging rights for rest of the year.
freo vs. eagles
Round 22 of the AFL season, the Fremantle Dockers take on the West Coast Eagles, in the 55th edition of the Western Derby. Screening live and loud across all of our Varsity sports bar locations, this is a match that’s not to be missed… especially when you’re watching it amongst the insane ambiance of a Varsity bar.
Bounce-down is scheduled for 5.40PM, so we recommend coming down with your mates earlier to save yourself a table and get stuck into some frothies beforehand. Wear your team’s colours and prepare yourself for a helluva evening.

With the Dockers winning the past two Western Derbies, the Eagles are feeling the pressure to stop the purple’s winning streak. Not to mention the Eagles’ 2 wins and 18 losses, placing them second last on the 2022 AFL ladder… they’re certainly going to need to pull up their socks up to give Dockers a run for their money.
Dockers on the other hand have seen a successful season so far, holding their 6th position firmly alongside Brisbane Lions, Sydney Swans and Melbourne Demons. Whether they can make their way up to the Premiership however, is a different story… we’re feeling hopeful yet, aren’t jumping onto Sportsbet just yet.

This Saturday will mark the 55th edition of the Western Derby between Perth rivals Freo and Eagles. There are two Western Derbies every year during the home and away season. From 1995 they were held at Subiaco Oval and now (since 2018) they’re held at Optus Stadium.
Although Eagles were the dominant team in the early days (winning the first 9 derbies), Fremantle won their first derby in 1999 and are the current holders of the Western Derby Trophy after defeating Eagles with an impressive 55 points in round 3 in the 2022 AFL season.

If you’re holding out for the women’s Western Derby, the action will be screened live at Varsity on 22nd September. Marking this the fifth edition of the Women’s Derby. It might seem far away now, but it’ll creep up faster than you might expect.
Keep a close eye out for the first AFLW match late August. It’s going to be a doozy! With the Grand Final set for the last weekend of November, we’re already eager to get stuck into it.
